People often ask me to participate in group shows with the stipulation that the piece should be small. I can understand that, they want to fit a lot of art into a limited space, it makes sense. Unfortunately, I have found that trying to reproduce the paintings I have been doing in a small scale just doesn’t work. The times I have attempted it, to cram so many strokes into a small piece, have ended poorly. Driving me insane for substandard paintings. With that in mind – when someone asks me to create a piece for a show by stating, “the bigger the better” – you can bet they have my attention. That is exactly what Didi at Poets and Artists Magazine did when she requested a piece for this show. My dreams of a stupidly large painting were somewhat crushed by the reality that I would need to, somehow, get this piece from Boston to Chicago but, I think I came up with a good compromise. The piece will be a diptych, two panels that are as large as possible – while still fitting into a Honda Civic. Apparently, that is two 3′ wide by 6′-6″ tall panels. Added bonus, a good excuse for a road trip.
The show will open at the Zhou B. Art Center in Chicago on February 15th. I have never seen the space but, based on the list of great artists participating and, their request for large scale works, I expect it to be an amazing show.
